To some people PageRank is the be all and end all of making money on the internet. If you haven’t heard about it, PageRank is Google’s ranking system to determine what sites are more important than others. It is an algorithm that awards a site for having others link to it. It makes sense that if you have incoming links, then someone else out there thinks that you are worth linking to. A good description of the basic algorithm can be found at Wikipedia.
Of course if there is a known way to rank something, then there is also a known way to raise your ranking, you simply have to get links to your site. Maybe once it was easy, but these days Google is getting better and better at filtering out the spam and giving the right results. There are plenty of people out there saying that for a price they can get you PageRank. Some, or even many of them may actually do that, but be cautious, what may work today might be negative in the future.
One of my favorite articles recently was “101 Ways to Build Link Popularity in 2006” from seobook.com. A good read on things to do (or not) to gain the all important PageRank.
The little I have also learned from my readings so far are meta tags. Specifically the keywords and description tags. More on those soon.
